Doug McIlwaine

I have always been interesting in building and making things.  As a child, I assembled plastic model cars.  Woodworking is a continuation of that hobby except that I make the parts that are assembled into the finished product.  A chemist by training, woodworking is a hobby that is a wonderful release from the stresses of everyday life.  Figured woods are a particular interest of mine as I particularly enjoy the process of looking at a piece of wood and imagining the possibilities.

I am self taught having learned through reading and videos before undertaking my first project; a crib for our infant son.  Though mistakes were made, the crib was built in time.  In the following years, I’ve made beds for each son, and various pieces of furniture for family and friends.  I have recently become very interested in wood turning, perhaps to keep up with my son Ben and his turning skills.  I especially enjoy picking pieces out of a woodpile and discovering the bowl or plate that is contained within a piece of lumber that was considered scrap.    Lately, I have begun experimenting with gilding techniques and its incorporation into turned pieces.  I hope that you enjoy the pictures of some of my projects.
