Sam Scruggs came to Savannah, GA in the Fall of 2003 as a photography
student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Falling into such a
beautiful city, he was immediately inspired to make great photographs.
He fell into a trap, however. In such a beautiful place, it is
difficult to make unique photographs that do this amazing city justice,
and so confined himself to the studio for a couple of years to work on
portrait, fashion, and product photography. He kept returning to the
Savannah landscape, however, to try to capture it in an exciting way,
including the colors and mystery of Savannah.
For the past two years, he has been trying different techniques to capture Savannah at night, using different cameras, film, and lighting techniques, before finally settling on one main technique that gives the results he was looking for. In a photography world that is quickly shifting to digital, all of the images and lighting effects you see in the pictures on this website are captured on film, in-camera. The film is scanned in to a computer, where only slight changes in color are made, before being sent to professional printers to create the final prints. Because of the cameras and film used, these prints retain incredible detail, even when printed to large sizes.
Savannah By Night is a work in progress. The images here represent the start of a larger body of work, which will expand over the next year into about 50 images, taken all over Savannah, and representing much of it's diverse Landscape.
